Pixel Tribe's Goddess Order: A Deep Dive into Pixel Art and Gameplay
This interview with Ilsun (Art Director) and Terron J. (Contents Director) of Pixel Tribe offers a fascinating look into the development of their upcoming Kakao Games title, Goddess Order, a mobile action RPG.
Droid Gamers: What inspires the pixel sprites?
Ilsun: Goddess Order's high-quality pixel art aims for a console-level aesthetic, emphasizing narrative. Inspiration draws from a vast well of gaming and storytelling experiences. Pixel art is about nuanced expression of form and movement through tiny units, more about the subtle influence of accumulated experience than specific references. Collaboration is key; the initial characters (Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan) evolved through team discussions, shaping the game's art style. Ongoing dialogue with scenario writers and combat designers further refines character design, ensuring visual coherence with narrative and gameplay mechanics.
Droid Gamers: How do you build the fantasy world?
Terron J.: World-building begins with the characters. Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan provided the foundation. Their inherent qualities, missions, and stories organically shaped the game's world. The characters' strength and vitality, as revealed through storytelling, heavily influenced the game's design, particularly the emphasis on manual controls. The writing process felt less like work and more like a collaborative journey of discovery.
Droid Gamers: How are combat styles and animations designed?
Terron J.: Goddess Order's combat system features three characters using linked skills. Design focuses on creating unique roles for each character within the turn-based system, emphasizing strategic formation and the timing of linked skills. Characters are adjusted if they lack a unique advantage or if controls feel cumbersome.
Ilsun: Visual representation enhances these characteristics. Weapon choice, appearance, and movement are carefully considered to reflect character personality and concept. Despite the 2D pixel art, Goddess Order features three-dimensional character movement, enhancing visual impact. The team uses physical props to study detailed movements, adding originality to each character's combat style.
Terron J.: Technical optimization is crucial for mobile performance. The team ensures smooth gameplay, even on lower-spec devices, without compromising cutscene immersion.
Ilsun: Future updates will include chapter and origin stories, along with additional activities like quests and treasure hunts. Advanced content with refined controls will also be added post-launch.
