Call of Duty Studio Loses Multiplayer Development Director

After a 15-year tenure, Greg Reisdorf, Call of Duty's Multiplayer Creative Director, has departed Sledgehammer Games. His contributions spanned numerous Call of Duty titles, beginning with Modern Warfare 3 (2011).

Reisdorf played a pivotal role in the development of Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty entries, starting with the original Modern Warfare 3 in 2011. Sledgehammer Games, established in 2009, collaborated extensively with Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven Software on various Call of Duty releases, including the recent Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

On January 10th, Reisdorf confirmed his departure via Twitter, detailing his accomplishments. His early work on Modern Warfare 3 included the Scorched Earth campaign mission and a memorable sequence in the Blood Brothers mission featuring Soap MacTavish.

Reisdorf's influence extended to the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, shaping gameplay mechanics in Advanced Warfare (boost jumps, dodging, tactical reloads) and contributing to unique weapons and maps. He openly discussed his reservations about Advanced Warfare's "Pick 13" system, preferring a reward system that doesn't restrict essential loadout choices.

He also reflected on Call of Duty: WW2, noting the initial limitations of the Divisions system and its subsequent improvement. His contributions to Call of Duty: Vanguard included the design of both discovery and classic three-lane maps, reflecting his preference for enjoyable gameplay over strict military realism.

His recent work on 2023's Modern Warfare 3 included overseeing multiplayer map development, revisiting classic Modern Warfare 2 maps (like Rust, adding Shepherd's skull), and directing the creation of live season modes (including Season 1's Snowfight and Infectious Holiday). His involvement encompassed over 20 modes throughout Modern Warfare 3's post-launch support. Reisdorf's future plans remain within the gaming industry.
