Why Bethesda Cut Gore and Dismemberment From Starfield

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 19,2025

Bethesda's Starfield initially featured planned gore and dismemberment mechanics, but technical hurdles forced their removal. Dennis Mejillones, a former character artist who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that the complexity of integrating these features with the game's space suits proved insurmountable.

The intricate design of the suits, including helmets and various attachments, created significant technical challenges. Mejillones described the resulting development process as a "big rat's nest," highlighting the need to account for numerous variables like helmet removal, flesh detailing, and the impact of customizable body sizes.

While some fans expressed disappointment over the absence of gore and dismemberment – features present in Fallout 4 – Mejillones argued that such mechanics are more fitting for Fallout's humorous tone. He stated that the gore was "part of the fun" in the Fallout universe.

Despite this omission, Starfield's September 2023 release attracted over 15 million players. IGN's 7/10 review noted the game's compelling RPG elements and combat, ultimately outweighing certain shortcomings.

Recent revelations from another former Bethesda developer highlighted unexpected loading issues, particularly in Neon. However, Bethesda has actively addressed post-launch issues, including implementing a 60fps performance mode and releasing the Shattered Space expansion in September.
