Marvel Gaming Universe Plan Fails Over Funding

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 15,2026

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has revolutionized entertainment with its interconnected films and TV shows, weaving a sprawling narrative across multiple releases. In contrast, Marvel video games operate independently, with titles like Insomniac’s Spider-Man series entirely separate from Eidos-Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Even upcoming projects such as Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, Marvel’s Wolverine, and Marvel’s Blade showcase no shared continuity.

Disney once envisioned a Marvel Gaming Universe—a cohesive gaming ecosystem mirroring the MCU’s success. What derailed this ambitious plan?

On The Fourth Curtain podcast, industry veterans Alexander Seropian and Alex Irvine discussed their involvement in this shelved MGU initiative and its untimely demise.

Seropian—co-founder of Bungie (Halo, Destiny) and former Disney gaming executive—spearheaded the MGU concept pre-MCU era. Irvine, Marvel’s longtime narrative architect, contributed to projects like the breakout hit Marvel Rivals.

Reflecting on Marvel’s gaming ambitions, Irvine revealed: "Early discussions envisioned an interconnected gaming universe parallel to the MCU. Despite extensive planning, the vision never materialized."

"This was my brainchild at Disney," Seropian confirmed. "We aimed to bridge standalone titles before cinematic crossovers became mainstream."

The duo elaborated on potential MGU mechanics, including ARG-inspired elements linking games through shared hubs and transmedia narratives—ideas ultimately shelved due to budgetary constraints.

Complexity may have doomed the project. Irvine explained: "Debates over differentiation from comics/movies created paralyzing questions about creative governance."

The lost potential tantalizes: Might Spider-Man have interacted with Square Enix’s Avengers cast? Could games have built toward MCU-scale crossover events?

With Marvel’s Wolverine underway, questions arise about potential Spider-Man universe connections—perhaps residual MGU thinking influencing modern development.

While relegated to gaming’s "what-if" annals, the MGU concept endures as fascinating counterfactual history—a vision that might thrive in alternate realities.
