"AI to Revolutionize Game Development: Tim Sweeney Predicts Small Teams Can Create Major Titles"

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is confident that the future of game development will be revolutionized by AI, allowing small teams to craft expansive, immersive experiences comparable to Nintendo’s critically acclaimed open-world title *The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild*. Speaking at Epic’s State of Unreal 2025 event—where CD Projekt showcased an impressive tech demo for *The Witcher 4*—Sweeney emphasized that AI-powered prompts will become a core component of modern game engines. He believes this advancement will pave the way for entirely new genres and gameplay mechanics previously thought impractical or unattainable.

Tim Sweeney discusses AI's role in gaming.

“Every major technological leap has sparked the creation of innovative games,” Sweeney explained. “Back when 3D gaming first became feasible, titles like *Doom* and *Wolfenstein* introduced the world to the first-person shooter genre. Similarly, the battle royale format only took off once hardware and engine capabilities allowed for 100 players in a single space.”

He went on to highlight how AI-driven characters could enable limitless dialogue options with minimal setup effort. This would allow smaller studios to develop deeply interactive worlds filled with dynamic personalities. “Imagine a 10-person team building something as vast and intricate as *Breath of the Wild*, where AI handles all the dialogue while developers simply provide character summaries. That kind of creative power will be within reach in just a few years,” he said.

Sweeney’s optimism around AI is well-documented, and Epic is already putting it into practice. Last month, an AI-powered version of Darth Vader made his debut in *Fortnite*—a groundbreaking move in the ever-expanding battle royale landscape. The character can sing, join or leave squads freely, respond intelligently to players, deliver spontaneous lines, summarize in-game events, and even warn players about incoming threats.

The voice of Darth Vader was provided by the late James Earl Jones, who passed away in September 2024 at age 93. This AI-generated version of his iconic voice was created using Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash model and ElevenLabs’ Flash v2.5, with full permission from the Jones family.

The introduction of AI-generated voices has led to wider discussions about the ethical implications of using generative AI to recreate performances from deceased actors. Despite these concerns, Sweeney remains convinced that AI technology offers more benefits than drawbacks for society and creative industries.

“AI exists to enhance human creativity and streamline production,” he stated. “It’s unfortunate that some companies have misused AI by harvesting massive amounts of data without consent. But at its core, AI should act as a multiplier for our creative potential.

“Empowering indie developers to build larger, richer games also means AAA studios can push boundaries even further, creating colossal, polished masterpieces. As everyone races to adapt to this new frontier, we’ll see a dramatic transformation unfold. Much like previous breakthroughs, I believe the long-term impact of AI on creativity and opportunity will be overwhelmingly positive.”

Unfazed by any controversy surrounding the AI version of Darth Vader, Epic has announced plans to let players create their own custom AI NPCs in *Fortnite*, opening up a new era of personalized gameplay and storytelling possibilities.
