In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch's developers shed light on the innovative features of Ghost of Yotei. Creative Director Jason Cornell emphasized that the game will offer players the most freedom in gameplay and the largest maps ever crafted by the studio. Unlike its predecessor, Ghost of Yotei allows players to explore and discover the locations of the Yotei Six at their own pace, enhancing the challenge and thrill of avenging them.

The game's PS5 release date was announced last week, accompanied by a new trailer, "The Onryō’s List," which provided fans with glimpses of the story and gameplay. The trailer introduced the protagonist, Atsu, and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six.

More Melee Weapons

Alongside the freedom in exploration, Ghost of Yotei expands players' weapon choices. The latest trailer sparked speculation among fans about new weapons, which Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed in the same interview. In addition to the iconic samurai sword, players can now wield the odachi, a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear.

Fox stressed that while the sword remains central to the gameplay, players can learn to use other weapons from various teachers and masters encountered throughout the story and open world. Unlike the honor-bound samurai of the previous game, Atsu's non-samurai status frees her from traditional constraints, allowing her to use any available weapons on the battlefield, including those dropped by defeated enemies.

Ezo as the Setting

Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo, the historical name for present-day Hokkaido. Cornell described the setting as a "stage that balances a lawless environment with no security yet and an environment where danger lurks in the beauty of nature." The game aims to capture the magnificent and nature-rich scenery of Hokkaido.

The developers have also committed to representing the Ainu culture and its people, an indigenous group native to northern Japan. To ensure authenticity, the team visited Hokkaido, consulted with experts, and explored local museums. This dedication follows the high praise Ghost of Tsushima received for its accurate depiction of Japanese culture and history.
