Civilization VII: Initial Reviews Reveal a Mixed Bag

With Sid Meier's Civilization VII launching next week, the review embargo has ended, and initial impressions are pouring in. While overwhelmingly positive, the reviews paint a picture of a game with both significant improvements and notable shortcomings.

A major point of praise centers around the new Era System, a significant departure from previous iterations. This system allows civilizations to dynamically evolve over time, addressing past criticisms of overly lengthy matches and runaway civilizations. The three distinct eras each offer unique technological advancements and victory paths, creating a feeling of diverse gameplay experiences within a single game.

The flexibility to combine leaders and civilizations is another highly lauded feature. This strategic freedom allows for creative combinations of strengths, although historical accuracy may sometimes take a backseat.

Further improvements noted include refined city placement, a stronger focus on resource management, enhanced district building, and a streamlined user interface (UI). However, some reviewers found the UI's simplification to be excessive.

On the negative side, several critics cited smaller map sizes, impacting the overall sense of scale compared to previous Civilization games. Technical issues, such as bugs and frame rate drops (FPS drops) when accessing menus, were also reported. Furthermore, the abrupt ending of some matches, leaving players uncertain about the final victor, proved to be a recurring concern.
