Supercell's Squad Busters: A Solid Start, But Falling Short of Expectations

Supercell's latest mobile game, Squad Busters, a MOBA RTS hybrid, has achieved 40 million installs and $24 million in net revenue within its first month. This performance is particularly strong in the United States, followed by Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey, and South Korea.

However, despite these impressive figures, concerns are emerging. Revenue has steadily decreased since launch, significantly underperforming compared to Supercell's previous successes. Brawl Stars, for instance, generated $43 million in its first month in 2018, while Clash Royale exceeded $115 million in 2016. Furthermore, daily installs have also declined sharply, dropping from a peak of 30 million in the first week to less than five million by the end of the month.

Supercell Fatigue?

The diminishing returns for Squad Busters, a game Supercell clearly invested heavily in, raise questions about potential market saturation. Competitors like Honkai Star Rail, which raked in $190 million in its first month, highlight this disparity.

While Squad Busters is a well-made game, its similarity to Supercell's existing portfolio may be contributing to a sense of "Supercell fatigue" among players. The long-term performance of Squad Busters remains to be seen.
