The 29 Card Game, sometimes referred to as the 28 Card Game with slight rule differences, is a popular South Asian trick-taking game. In this game, the Jack and the Nine are the highest-ranking cards in each suit.
Typically, 29 is played by four players in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other.
The game uses 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck. Each of the four French suits—hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades—contains eight cards. Card ranks in each suit, from highest to lowest, are: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective is to win tricks that contain valuable cards.
The point values for the cards are as follows:
Jacks - 3 points each
Nines - 2 points each
Aces - 1 point each
Tens - 1 point each
All other cards (Kings, Queens, 8s, and 7s) have no point value.
This adds up to a total of 28 card points. In some variations, the final trick earns an additional point, bringing the total to 29—this is how the game got its name. Although many modern players do not count the extra point for the last trick, the game is still widely known as 29.
Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives removed from the full deck are used as trump indicators: each player receives one card from each of these suits. Sixes are used for scorekeeping, with each partnership using one red and one black Six to track points.
