Following the release of a behind-the-scenes look at *The Witcher 4’s* cinematic reveal trailer, some fans noted what they perceived as a difference in Ciri’s facial appearance in brief in-game clips shown at the 2:11 and 5:47 marks. These clips offered close-up views of Ciri's model, prompting discussion about her look compared to the trailer. One commenter even praised the 5:47 mark appearance, calling it a "perfect representation of a slightly older Ciri." This fueled existing online discussions regarding Ciri's appearance in the reveal trailer.

Initial speculation, building on previous reactions, suggested a potential "backlash" and subsequent alteration of Ciri's in-game model. However, *The Witcher 4* game director Sebastian Kalemba clarified on social media that Ciri's model remained unchanged. He explained that the behind-the-scenes footage showcased a "snapshot" of the model before the application of cinematic effects, lighting, and animation seen in the reveal trailer.

Kalemba emphasized that variations in appearance are common during development and that a character's look might differ depending on the context—be it a trailer, 3D model, or in-game rendering. This echoes a sentiment expressed by a Witcher subreddit commenter, who humorously noted the impact of lighting on in-game character models.

*The Witcher 4*, the first in a new trilogy, features Ciri as the protagonist, a decision both Małgorzata Mitręga (executive producer) and Kalemba defended. They highlighted Ciri's significance in the books and her suitability as a protagonist following Geralt’s previous storyline. Mitręga described the choice as "organic and logical," emphasizing Ciri's layered character and the opportunities for narrative exploration. Kalemba added that Ciri's younger age allows for greater player agency in shaping her character arc.

While acknowledging potential negative reactions to Ciri's starring role, both Mitręga and Kalemba reiterated that the decision was deliberate and carefully considered over many years. They stressed the richness of Ciri's story and the potential for an epic saga built around her journey. Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle also voiced his support for the decision, highlighting the exciting narrative potential of shifting the focus to Ciri.
