Sony Unveils teamLFG: New PlayStation Studio from Bungie, Crafting Team-Based Action Game Blending Fighting, MOBA, and 'Frog-Type' Elements

Sony has recently unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, which is currently working on its debut game. According to a post on the PlayStation Blog by Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, teamLFG was originally formed at Bungie, the developers behind Destiny and Marathon. The studio is now focusing on an ambitious project that Hulst is particularly enthusiastic about.

The name teamLFG is derived from the gaming term 'Looking For Group,' highlighting the studio's emphasis on social gaming. Their first project is described as a team-based action game, drawing inspiration from a diverse range of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." The game will be set in a lighthearted, comedic world within a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe.

teamLFG is committed to fostering a sense of community and belonging among players. "We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging," the studio stated. They aim to create an environment where players feel excited to log on and connect with friends, celebrate memorable in-game moments, and engage in a shared gaming experience. "We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff," they added.

The studio plans to develop immersive multiplayer worlds that players can enjoy and master over countless hours. They intend to involve their community in the development process through early access playtests and remain responsive to player feedback, both before and after the game's launch, to continually enhance the game and its community.

teamLFG's game is the result of an incubation project that was spun out of Bungie during significant layoffs last year. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, which led to layoffs affecting approximately 100 employees in November 2023. A second round of layoffs in 2024 impacted another 220 employees, representing 17% of the studio's workforce, with an additional 155 being reassigned within Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during these changes that the incubation project was announced.

A former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's involvement in improving Destiny 2, noting that the parent company's influence was beneficial. Since then, Bungie has fully unveiled the extraction shooter Marathon and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. There are no plans for Destiny 3, and a Destiny spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
