Director Andy Muschietti Provides Update on Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation

Director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, recently offered an update on the long-awaited film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. The project, initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, has been in development for over a decade, with game director Fumito Ueda involved in the production. While Josh Trank was initially attached, scheduling conflicts led to Muschietti taking the helm.

The announcement comes alongside Sony's recent reveal of several other game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated feature.

Muschietti confirmed on Radio TU's La Baulera del Coso that the Shadow of the Colossus film is not abandoned. He acknowledged the extended development time, attributing it to factors beyond creative control, specifically the challenges of balancing the project's budget with the IP's popularity. He confirmed the existence of multiple scripts, indicating a preferred version is currently under consideration.

The Shadow of the Colossus game's impact is undeniable, influencing titles like Capcom's 2024 Dragon's Dogma 2. While Muschietti isn't a self-described "big gamer," he calls the game a "masterpiece" and has played it multiple times. The director's passion, combined with Ueda's involvement (who has since founded GenDesign and unveiled a new sci-fi game at The Game Awards 2024), suggests a commitment to faithfully bringing the game's unique atmosphere to the big screen. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the legacy of Shadow of the Colossus continues, with hopes that the film adaptation will resonate with existing fans and introduce new audiences to its compelling world.
