Batman Podcast Launches New Companion Series

Author:Kristen Update:May 15,2025

Superhero comics have transcended traditional media, now inspiring not only movies and TV shows but also high-budget podcasts and audio dramas. DC has embarked on its most ambitious podcast venture yet with the launch of DC High Volume: Batman, a series dedicated to adapting the Dark Knight's most iconic comic book narratives into audio format.

However, to fully appreciate the depth of this project, listeners should not limit themselves to just the main series. DC is enhancing the experience with a companion show within the DC High Volume feed. This companion series, hosted by writer and journalist Coy Jandreau, delves into the creation of DC High Volume: Batman through interviews with the cast, crew, and the original comic creators who inspired the series. The inaugural companion episode, set to release on Thursday, April 24, will feature conversations with Batman voice actor Jason Spisak and DC's Creative Director of Animation & Audio Content, Mike Pallotta.

In a recent phone interview with IGN, Jandreau shared insights into how the companion series complements and expands the DC High Volume: Batman saga. Here's a deeper look into what this groundbreaking project entails and how it aims to enrich the Batman experience for fans.

What Is DC High Volume: Batman?

DC High Volume: Batman is a pioneering audio drama series, a collaboration between DC and the podcast platform Realm. The series meticulously adapts classic Batman comic books, starting with "Batman: Year One," into an immersive audio experience. Jason Spisak lends his voice to Bruce Wayne/Batman, while Jay Paulson voices Jim Gordon.

Jandreau describes the series as "the first of its kind to this scale," emphasizing its one-to-one storytelling approach from the comics to audio format. "It's taking Batman: Year One, it's taking Long Halloween, and it's turning them into this full, immersive audio experience with incredible production design, audio special effects, super-talented voice actors, a score where different villains and heroes/characters have their own piece," he told IGN. This approach allows fans to experience Batman's story in a new, auditory medium, offering a fresh perspective on familiar tales.

The series begins with "Batman: Year One," which outlines Batman and Gordon's shared origins, and then moves into "The Long Halloween," set in Batman's second year. The goal is to create a continuous narrative using key chapters from Batman's graphic novels, appealing to both die-hard fans and newcomers to the character.

The High Volume Companion Series

Jandreau's companion series serves as an extension of the DC High Volume: Batman saga, offering listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the production and adaptation process. Available in both audio and video formats, the first episode will premiere on April 24, closely following the main series' transition to "Batman: The Long Halloween."

The companion series aims to highlight the talents involved in the project, from voice actors and composers to the original comic creators. Jandreau, previously involved with DC Studio Showcase, was a natural choice to host due to his deep connection with comic book culture.

In the debut episode, Jandreau discusses with Spisak the nuances of voicing Batman, exploring how the character's voice evolves and adapts depending on his interactions with different characters. "In Year One, as you've been hearing, it's Bruce Wayne becoming the Bat... But hearing it, it's fascinating to hear the Bat voice develop," Jandreau shared.

The structure of the companion series is flexible, focusing on key emotional and plot points from the main series rather than strictly following its chapter-by-chapter progression. This approach allows Jandreau to provide context and insights that enhance the listener's experience at the right moments.

Jandreau drew inspiration for his interview style from a blend of sources, including "Inside the Actors Studio," "Hot Ones," and classic late-night talk shows, aiming to create a dynamic and engaging format.

The Future of DC High Volume: Batman

Looking forward, Jandreau expressed his desire to interview key figures in Batman's comic history, such as Jeph Loeb, the writer of "The Long Halloween," and Jim Lee, his collaborator on "Batman: Hush." Both are currently involved in new projects, making their insights particularly relevant.

Additionally, Jandreau hopes to feature Tom King, whose recent Batman run included significant developments in the character's life. King's unique perspective, shaped by his background and storytelling approach, could offer fascinating insights into Batman's psyche and relationships.

Ultimately, Jandreau's goal with the companion series is to foster positivity within the Batman fandom. He acknowledges the often contentious nature of online fandoms but aims to create a space where fans can celebrate their shared love for Batman and comics in general. "I think it's important we find the positivity in that because there's plenty of negativity in the world," he said, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and welcoming new fans into the fold.
