Apple Unveils iPhone 16e: The New Budget-Friendly Option

Author:Kristen Update:May 14,2025

On Wednesday morning, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e, marking it as the most affordable option in their current lineup. This new model replaces the 2022 iPhone SE, shifting away from the deep discounts the SE series was known for. Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e narrows the price gap with the $799 iPhone 16, which was released last fall. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e begin on Friday, Feb. 21, with availability starting the following week on Friday, Feb. 28.

The iPhone 16e introduces Apple's C1 cellular modem, the first of its kind in their smartphones. Apple has a strong track record with its proprietary chips, like the M1 and A-series in their computers and mobile devices. The cellular modem, often overlooked, is crucial for connectivity. If the C1 modem doesn't meet expectations, it could lead to various connectivity issues. Apple's history with the "Antennagate" scandal involving the iPhone 4's signal problems underscores the importance of getting the modem right. Hopefully, Apple has ensured robust connectivity for the iPhone 16e.

From the front, the iPhone 16e closely resembles the iPhone 14, featuring a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 2532x1170 resolution and 1,200-nit peak brightness. While it doesn't match the sharpness or brightness of the iPhone 16, it includes the Action button and a USB-C port, though it lacks the Camera Control feature. The back of the iPhone 16e sets it apart with a single 48MP camera, similar to the iPhone SE. It shares much in common with the iPhone 16's main camera but misses out on sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic styles, and adjustable focus in portrait mode. The front-facing camera, however, is identical to the iPhone 16, including Face ID.

The iPhone 16e is encased in aluminum with a glass back and Apple's Ceramic Shield on the front. While Apple touts the Ceramic Shield as "tougher than any smartphone glass," it's worth noting that a newer version of Ceramic Shield claims to be "two times tougher." This raises questions about the durability of the older Ceramic Shield used in the iPhone 16e, especially after observing wear and tear on the iPhone 16's display during testing.

Internally, the iPhone 16e demonstrates Apple's strategy of product differentiation. While the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro feature an A18 Pro chip with enhanced performance, the iPhone 16e uses an "A18" chip with the same number of CPU cores but a reduced 4-core GPU compared to the iPhone 16's 5-core GPU. This suggests a performance step down from the iPhone 16. However, the inclusion of the Neural Engine means the iPhone 16e can still leverage Apple Intelligence features.

The iPhone 16e, priced at $599, represents a compromise to maintain affordability while still offering a relatively recent design. This contrasts with the 2022 iPhone SE, which launched at $429 with a significantly older design but a near 50% discount compared to the then $799 iPhone 13. With the Android market offering competitive alternatives around $600, like the OnePlus 13R, Apple faces challenges in attracting buyers not already committed to their ecosystem. The real-world performance of the iPhone 16e will ultimately determine its success in the market.
