WoW Patch 11.1 Introduces Two New Races

World of Warcraft Patch 11.1, titled Undermined, is set to introduce exciting new gameplay elements in the form of two unique race types: Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and Skyrocket races, replacing traditional Skyriding challenges in the expansive Goblin capital of Undermine.

Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. Races

The newly introduced D.R.I.V.E. system replaces flying mounts in Undermine with customizable, car-like vehicles that allow players to navigate the sprawling subterranean city at high speeds. These cars offer a mount-like experience tailored for ground-based mobility, providing an efficient and thrilling way to traverse the zone.

Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races are designed to maximize the potential of these vehicles, offering fast-paced courses filled with twists, turns, and speed boosts. Players can expect intense racing action as they maneuver through the Junkyard Jaunt, Casino Cruise, Sandy Scuttle, and other dynamic tracks.

Skyrocket Races

In place of Skyriding, players will now experience Skyrocket races, which utilize Goblin jetpacks for aerial navigation. Unlike traditional flight mechanics in World of Warcraft, Skyrocket races require racers to maintain constant motion—similar to Skyriding momentum—but without the altitude loss associated with it. This creates a unique blend of movement dynamics that emphasize both speed and control.

As demonstrated by WoW content creator MrGM on the Public Test Realm, racers gain velocity by collecting rings during the race. However, increased speed reduces turning responsiveness, making later stages of each race significantly more challenging. The current course list includes:

  • Skyrocketing Sprint
  • The Heaps Leap
  • Scrapshop Shot
  • Rags to Riches Run

Each race also features reverse versions, though there are currently no advanced or challenge-tier variations like those found in some Skyriding races.

Achievements and Rewards

Completing all Skyrocket and Breakneck races with Bronze, Silver, and Gold-tier times unlocks special achievements, encouraging competitive play and mastery of the new systems.

Player Reception and Future Development

Initial reactions to Skyrocket races have been varied. While some players appreciate the fresh approach to aerial movement, others have criticized the controls as stiff and unresponsive compared to Skyriding. Fortunately, Patch 11.1 remains in development, allowing Blizzard time to refine the mechanics before its anticipated February release.

This update promises to bring a renewed sense of excitement and innovation to World of Warcraft’s racing systems, especially within the vibrant and chaotic world of Undermine.
