Taskmaster's Absence in New Thunderbolts Teaser Sparks Debate

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 18,2025

The latest teaser for Thunderbolts has ignited a flurry of speculation among Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans, particularly regarding the fate of Taskmaster. The September 2024 trailer showcased Taskmaster standing alongside Ghost and U.S. Agent in the Watchtower scene. However, the new teaser released recently reveals the same scene, but with Taskmaster conspicuously absent.

What happened to Taskmaster?

This absence, coupled with the recent announcement of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, which included Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman but notably omitted Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster's actress), has led many fans to speculate that Taskmaster may not survive Thunderbolts.

The change in the scene has sparked numerous theories. Some fans believe Marvel might be employing a double-bluff strategy or adjusting their plans for Avengers: Doomsday. Additionally, subtle differences in character positioning between the two frames have fueled further speculation. Could Sentry, known for his ability to 'delete' people, have already eliminated Taskmaster in this scene? Or perhaps Taskmaster has turned against the team?

"Marvel pretty much just sealed the fate of this character in the movie," remarked redditor Matapple13, reflecting the sentiment that Kurylenko's absence from the Avengers: Doomsday cast list and Taskmaster's removal from the teaser hint at a grim fate. On the other hand, some fans, like puckallday, suggest that Marvel's minimal showcasing of Taskmaster could indicate a surprising twist where the character survives.

PlayThe teaser also emphasizes Sentry's overwhelming power, with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) describing him as "stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one." This statement has led to speculation that Sentry could be responsible for Taskmaster's disappearance, possibly by eliminating or banishing her with a mere thought.

The MCU has been abuzz with developments this week, including debates over whether the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement has spoiled elements of Thunderbolts. Moreover, both Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. have hinted that more cast reveals for Avengers: Doomsday are forthcoming, leaving room for hope that Taskmaster might yet have a role to play.

The wait won't be long. Thunderbolts is slated for release in May 2025, followed by the TV show Ironheart in June, and the kickoff of Phase 6 with The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, with Secret Wars following in May 2027.
