Magic: The Gathering Reveals Tarkir's Dragonstorm

Author:Kristen Update:Oct 15,2025

The fierce Khan clans and mighty dragons return to battle in Magic: The Gathering's upcoming Tarkir: Dragonstorm set. Launching April 11 with pre-orders now available, this expansion revisits the war-torn plane of Tarkir with formidable new creatures, beloved returning characters, and innovative mechanics that will revolutionize deck strategies. Wizards has begun unveiling the set's content, and as a proud Scion of the Ur-Dragon Commander deck owner, I can already foresee some frustratingly powerful additions for my playgroup.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm - Key Features and Gameplay Highlights

Tarkir's five warring clans - Abzan Houses (White/Black/Green), Jeskai Way (Blue/Red/White), Mardu Horde (Red/White/Black), Sultai Brood (Black/Green/Blue), and Temur Frontier (Green/Blue/Red) - each battle under their Khan's banner with distinct playstyles. Wizards is gradually revealing new clan-specific mechanics and teasing the devastating dragon cards that will reshape the battlefield.

Each clan receives unique mechanics that reinforce their identity. Jeskai's Flurry mechanic rewards casting multiple spells per turn, while Sultai's Renew exiles graveyard cards to empower creatures with counters. Mardu's Mobilize generates disposable attackers for aggressive strategies, and Temur's Harmonize revives spells from graveyards at reduced costs. Abzan's Endure triggers powerful effects when non-token creatures perish, perfectly demonstrated by Anafenza, Undying Lineage - creating flying tokens or distributing +1/+1 counters.

The set also introduces two impactful dragon mechanics: Omen and Behold. Omen operates like Adventures, letting you cast cards as creatures or spells (with the latter shuffling back into your deck). Behold activates when revealing or controlling dragons - Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant demonstrates this by generating Treasure tokens on entry. These flexible mechanics work across color combinations, offering intriguing deckbuilding opportunities.

The dragon highlights include Betor, Kin to All (2WBG), whose game-changing effects scale with your total creature toughness - from card advantage to life total manipulation. With base 7 toughness and potential combos with dragons like Utvara Hellkite, Betor promises to dominate games.

Ugin returns as a colorless planeswalker (CMC 7) with devastating potential. His passive exiles permanents when casting colorless spells, while his ultimate allows free casting of exiled colorless non-land cards. Starting at seven loyalty with a +2 ability, Ugin becomes an immediate win condition in Eldrazi or artifact decks.

Following the Final Fantasy crossover, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands as my most anticipated Magic release this year. With most cards still unrevealed, my Scion deck eagerly awaits potential inclusions of classic dragons like Atarka or Ojutai, or perhaps a new five-color dragon legend. One thing's certain - April 11 can't come soon enough for this dragon-fueled battlefield evolution.
