"Switch 2 Fans May Face Disappointment at Next Pokemon Event"

Summary

  • No news expected on Switch 2 Pokemon titles at the next Pokemon Presents on February 27.
  • Leaks suggest an upcoming Switch 2 reveal, but Pokemon games will likely remain exclusive to the original console for now.
  • The next Pokemon Presents will likely focus on Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Pokemon fans eagerly awaiting announcements about Switch 2 Pokemon titles may need to temper their expectations for the upcoming Pokemon Presents scheduled for Thursday, February 27. Since its inception on the original Game Boy in the 90s, Pokemon has been a staple on Nintendo hardware, but it appears that fans might have to wait a bit longer for the franchise to make its mark on the Switch 2.

As of now, Nintendo has not officially unveiled the Switch 2. However, the company has confirmed that the next-generation console exists and will support backward compatibility with the original Switch, along with carrying over Nintendo accounts. The Switch 2 is expected to be revealed within this fiscal year, but details beyond this are based on leaks, which suggest it will be an enhanced, larger version of the current Switch.

While new Pokemon games are certain to arrive on the Switch 2 eventually, fans should not expect any news on this front during the upcoming Pokemon Presents. According to Jeff Grubb, the event will focus on Pokemon titles currently in development for the original Switch, though these games will be compatible with the Switch 2 due to its backward compatibility feature.

Pokemon Presents Not Expected to Have News on Switch 2 Games

The upcoming Pokemon Presents is set to provide updates on ongoing live-service Pokemon games, such as Pokemon GO and Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket. Additionally, fans are eagerly anticipating more information on Pokemon Legends: Z-A, slated for release on the original Switch later this year. The only glimpse of Pokemon Legends: Z-A so far has been a brief teaser trailer showcasing the Lumiose City setting, some returning Pokemon, and the return of Mega Evolutions. Rumors also suggest another main series Pokemon game could launch this year, separate from Pokemon Legends: Z-A and the anticipated Generation 10 games.

Speculation is rife about the nature of this new main series game, with guesses pointing toward remakes of Pokemon Black and White or another installment in the Let's Go series. If these rumors hold true, these titles will be released for the original Switch, not the Switch 2. Consequently, it's likely that the first major Pokemon games designed exclusively for the Switch 2 will be the Generation 10 titles.

Historically, the Pokemon franchise has favored older hardware with larger install bases, as evidenced by the release of Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 on the original DS instead of the 3DS. It appears this trend may continue with the Switch and Switch 2. However, all of this remains unconfirmed, and fans will need to tune into the Pokemon Presents on February 27 for the latest updates.
