"Super Mario World" Sequel Announced and Removed from NBCUniversal Press Release

Author:Kristen Update:May 17,2025

The potential title for the sequel to *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* may have been revealed prematurely through an NBCUniversal press release. According to reports circulating online, the press release, which was meant to announce the company's Upfront Showcase offerings, inadvertently mentioned *Super Mario World* as an upcoming film set to be released on Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal.

The mention of *Super Mario World* was quickly retracted, with Universal editing the press release to remove any reference to Mario. Social media users, such as Wario64 on Twitter, were quick to spot and share the change:

Interestingly, the original text in the press release grouped *Super Mario World* alongside *Shrek* and *Minions*, suggesting that these are shorthand references to *Shrek 5* and *Minions 3*, respectively. This implies that *Super Mario World* might not be the final title of the Mario sequel but rather a placeholder or umbrella term similar to the other mentioned films.

Despite the possibility that *Super Mario World* is not the official title, it is a more specific reference than a generic *Super Mario* or *Super Mario Bros.* This has led to speculation that it could indeed be the correct title for the upcoming sequel. Given the context and history of the Mario franchise, *Super Mario World* would be a fitting choice for the next installment in the series.
