Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

Author:Kristen Update:May 07,2025

Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends, has canceled an unannounced incubation project this week, leading to layoffs of an unspecified number of team members involved in the project. The news was initially reported by Insider Gaming, citing a now-removed LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who mentioned joining the job market after the project's cancellation.

IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this unannounced multiplayer FPS project. This project was spearheaded by a team that previously worked on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, a source familiar with the situation described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has stated on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.

This development is part of a broader trend of project cancellations and layoffs within Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023. The year saw significant job cuts, including 50 positions at BioWare and an unspecified number at Codemasters. Nearly a year ago, EA announced the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS, resulting in around two dozen job losses at Respawn. Following these cuts, BioWare underwent restructuring, with developers reassigned to other projects and additional key staff laid off.

IGN has sought a statement from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
