How to Parry Attacks in Avowed

You must block just before an enemy's attack lands. The game provides auditory feedback with a metal clanking sound and visual cues as the enemy staggers from your successful parry. The timing can vary slightly depending on the enemy, but with practice, you'll find it's less challenging than in games like *Dark Souls* or *Elden Ring*.

Parrying Isn’t Always an Option

Be aware that not all attacks in *Avowed* can be parried. Attacks marked with a red circle must be dodged instead. Additionally, the ability to parry depends on your weapon choice. Single-handed and two-handed weapons generally allow for parrying, as long as they're not in your off-hand. Shields in the off-hand can also be used for parrying. However, ranged weapons such as guns, wands, and bows, as well as grimoires, cannot parry.

What Parrying Does (& Why You Might Want to Do It)

Parrying in *Avowed* serves a crucial tactical purpose. It stuns and staggers your attacker, opening them up for significant damage. This makes parrying an excellent strategy for melee-focused characters looking to minimize damage taken while maximizing their offensive output.

However, the utility of parrying can vary based on your character build. It's most beneficial for those engaging enemies up close. If your build leans towards ranged combat, you might find other abilities more suitable. Fortunately, *Avowed* offers a straightforward and cost-effective respec system, allowing you to adjust your abilities, including Parry, as your playstyle evolves.

And that's everything you need to know about how to parry in *Avowed*.
