Mark Hamill Rejects Return as Naked Star Wars Ghost

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 25,2026

For fans hoping Mark Hamill might reprise his iconic role as Luke Skywalker's Force ghost, the actor himself has shut down those rumors. Speaking candidly, Hamill explained it's time for Star Wars to shift its focus from legacy characters and embrace new stories.

During a conversation with ComicBook.com while promoting his film The Life of Chuck, Hamill was directly asked about potentially returning as Luke's spectral form in the upcoming Rey-led New Jedi Order. His response was definitive: "Been there, done that." The actor humorously referenced Luke's memorable vanishing act in 2017's The Last Jedi, robes and all.

Hamill first appeared as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope
Mark Hamill debuted as Luke Skywalker in 1977's revolutionary space opera.

"I'll always be grateful to George [Lucas] for giving me this incredible opportunity back when Star Wars was just a passion project," Hamill reflected. "None of us imagined it would become this cultural phenomenon that keeps going decades later."

"But here's the thing," he continued with characteristic wit, "I've had my journey. It's time for fresh faces and new characters to carry the saga forward. Besides," he joked, "when Luke disappeared in [The Last Jedi], he left his robes behind. Even Jedi ghosts need appropriate attire!"

While Hamill rides off into the Tatooine sunset, Daisy Ridley prepares to return as Rey in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's sequel to The Rise of Skywalker. Set approximately 15 years after the previous installment, the film will follow Rey's efforts to revive the Jedi Order.

Details about New Jedi Order remain scarce, but Ridley offered tantalizing hints during a January 2024 interview with AlloCiné: "When I learned where the story was heading, I knew I had to be part of this," she shared. "It explores the Star Wars universe in exciting new ways while honoring what came before."

The Star Wars galaxy continues expanding with several projects on the horizon:
