First Look at New Characters in Mortal Kombat 2 Movie

The highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 2 film has revealed its first official look at several new characters joining the brutal tournament. Entertainment Weekly debuted exclusive images showcasing Karl Urban's Johnny Cage, Martyn Ford's towering Shao Kahn, and Adeline Rudolph's lethal Kitana, alongside returning fan-favorite Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion.

Hollywood Meets Outworld

Fans have been eagerly anticipating Karl Urban's transformation from The Boys' Billy Butcher to Mortal Kombat's cocky Hollywood action star ever since his character poster surfaced in the first film's universe. The released images show Urban perfectly capturing Cage's essence - complete with the iconic sunglasses and trademark smirk - striking a classic martial arts pose against a backdrop featuring returning heroes Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), and Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade).

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon shared insights with EW about Johnny Cage's fresh portrayal: "We're exploring his journey into this brutal world as a washed-up actor suddenly thrust into supernatural combat. Urban brings his own spin while keeping that core Cage energy - expect something hilarious yet surprisingly deep."

Director Simon McQuoid emphasized balancing the character's humor with substance: "Without Urban's range, Johnny could've easily become pure comic relief. We've crafted a version with real dimension beneath the cocky exterior."

Resurrection Rules Apply

The sequel features several shocking returns, including Josh Lawson's Kano and Max Huang's Kung Lao - both supposedly deceased. Boon teased how the film follows the games' loose approach to mortality: "With the NetherRealm and spirits in play, death rarely sticks in our universe."

Additional casting reveals include Damon Herriman as sinister sorcerer Quan Chi, Tati Gabrielle (The Last of Us) as jade, and Ana Thu Nguyen portraying Queen Sindel. While the cast expands, the violence promises to escalate when Mortal Kombat 2 premieres October 24, 2025.
