James Gunn Confirms Supergirl Rebrand Without Subtitle

Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow has officially been retitled to simply Supergirl, as confirmed by DC Universe's James Gunn.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn elaborated on this decision, which mirrors the recent name change of July's Superman: Legacy to Superman. He described how his creative team conducts "premortem" sessions to proactively identify potential issues that could lead to box office failures before production begins. The original title Superman: Legacy was actually discussed during one such session.

"I'm constantly refining everything," Gunn explained. "The Legacy title - we conduct something called a premortem. This is where our creative team gathers a couple months before filming to hypothetically examine what could potentially make this project fail spectacularly. Everyone can speak freely about concerns they'd normally only whisper about - whether it's casting doubts or production delays."

"One major concern I raised was the Superman: Legacy title itself. Though I originally named it that, I grew uncertain. First, I'm tired of the superhero-colon-subtitle format. Second, while the film deals with legacy themes, the title felt backward-looking when our approach is forward-thinking. The team unanimously agreed we should change it."

The Supergirl film, directed by Craig Gillespie with a script by Ana Nogueira, features Milly Alcock in the lead role. While details remain scarce (Alcock has been tight-lipped in recent interviews), Jason Momoa - who stars in the upcoming Minecraft movie - has playfully teased his anticipated Lobo costume for the project, prompting an amused response from Gunn.

Supergirl - officially dropping the "Woman of Tomorrow" subtitle - is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
