11 bit studios has exciting news for fans of the Frostpunk series, announcing Frostpunk 1886, a highly anticipated remake of the original game, slated for release in 2027. This announcement comes just over six months after the launch of Frostpunk 2, and nearly a decade after the first Frostpunk captivated players in 2018.

The Polish developer is harnessing the power of Unreal Engine 5 for this ambitious project. Frostpunk, a city-building survival game, is set in an alternate history during a late 19th-century volcanic winter. Players are tasked with building and maintaining a city, managing resources, making survival decisions, and exploring the surrounding areas for survivors and essential items.

IGN's review of the original Frostpunk awarded it a solid 9/10, praising its blend of thematic ideas and gameplay elements, describing it as an "engaging and unique, if occasionally unintuitive, strategy game." Frostpunk 2, while receiving a slightly lower score of 8/10, was appreciated for its "ground-up rethinking of its ice-age city builder mechanics," offering a more socially and politically complex experience, albeit less intimate than its predecessor.

Despite the focus on the new remake, 11 bit studios remains committed to supporting Frostpunk 2 with free major content updates, a console launch, and additional DLCs. The shift to Unreal Engine 5 for Frostpunk 1886 comes as the studio's proprietary Liquid Engine, which powered both the original Frostpunk and This War of Mine, is no longer in development.

11 bit studios emphasized that Frostpunk 1886 is not merely a visual upgrade but a comprehensive reimagining of the game. It introduces new content, mechanics, laws, and an exciting new "Purpose path," promising a fresh experience even for seasoned players. The use of Unreal Engine also enables the inclusion of long-awaited mod support and the potential for future DLC content, transforming Frostpunk 1886 into a living, expandable platform.

The studio envisions a future where both Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 evolve together, offering two distinct paths of survival in the unforgiving cold. Additionally, 11 bit studios is also working on another project, The Alters, set to be released in June.
