Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios has taken a surprising turn with their next installment in the series. On April 24, via a post on Twitter (X), they unveiled Frostpunk 1886, a complete remake of the original game, now powered by the Unreal Engine.

The announcement highlighted that Frostpunk 1886 will introduce a brand-new Purpose Path and eagerly awaited mod support, all while preserving the essence of the original game. 11 bit Studios elaborated further on their intentions in a Steam post dated the same day, expressing their vision for this ambitious project.

The transition from their proprietary Liquid Engine, which powered the first Frostpunk, to the Unreal Engine marks a significant shift. Inspired by the capabilities they explored while developing Frostpunk 2 with Unreal Engine 5, the team at 11 bit Studios saw an opportunity to enhance the original game. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they explained.
