Upgrade Steps:

Step 1: Freezing Dark Aether Crystals

Freeze three Dark Aether Crystals consecutively using the Staff of Ice. These crystals reside in underground Dark Aether lanterns (black frame, purple fire). Perks like Stamin-Up and PHD Flopper (with Tribologist) significantly aid this step. Optimize your route by strategically waiting for lantern spawns to minimize travel time. A suggested route starts in the tomb area, then the Shrine of the Hierophants, and finally the lantern near the Subterranean Temple entrance. Archibald's quote confirms successful completion. Enter the Dark Aether Nexus.

Step 2: Targeting Floating Runes

Locate three floating rocks in the Dark Aether Nexus, each displaying a glowing purple Rune. Shoot each Rune with the Staff of Ice (a hitmarker confirms success). This lowers the rocks, making Rune identification easier. A scoped weapon can improve accuracy. The order is irrelevant; shoot all three.

Step 3: The Rune Symbol Puzzle

A stone wall replaces a portal back to the main map. Find the corresponding area and locate a wall with glowing Runes. Shoot the three Runes matching the symbols from the floating rocks.
