Buffy Reboot Behind the Scenes Video Shows First Look at Sarah Michelle Gellar Alongside Series' New Star

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared a behind-the-scenes video giving fans their first glimpse of her alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong, the new lead in Hulu’s reboot of the franchise.

The two actresses embody two generations of Buffy, with Gellar set to hand over the Slayer’s mantle to Armstrong—last seen in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew—during the pilot episode of the upcoming reboot.

The video, posted by Gellar on Instagram, captures the pair training together ahead of the pilot’s upcoming shoot. While Gellar previously shared a screen recording of the call where she broke the news of Armstrong’s casting, this is the first time the two have been seen together in person.

Armstrong is expected to portray a new Slayer named Nova, while Gellar will reprise her iconic role as Buffy in the pilot before transitioning to a recurring role in future episodes—if the rest of the season receives Hulu’s approval.

The project is gaining momentum, with the cast gathering last month for a table read of the pilot script, a writers’ room established for additional episodes, and casting announcements made for other key roles.

Joining the cast are Severance’s Sarah Bock as Gracie, Nova’s best friend, and young actor Faly Rakotohavana as Hugo, a classmate with a crush on Nova. Frasier’s Jack Cutmore-Scott will play Mr. Burke, the new school librarian—a nod to the original series’ Giles.

If the pilot is greenlit, full production is slated to begin next spring.

No official word yet on other returning characters beyond Buffy herself, but Gellar—who also serves as an executive producer—has expressed hope that classic characters will make a comeback. Charisma Carpenter, who played Willow in the original series, has already told IGN she’s eager to return, following an “unjust” conclusion to her character’s arc on the spin-off Angel.
