While "Ta La" is the common term in the South, "Phom" is predominantly used in the North. The objective of Phom is to strategically collect and discard cards to form combinations known as "phoms" while simultaneously minimizing the point value of any leftover, unmatched cards. Played with a standard 52-card deck, the game's strategic depth and varied playing styles contribute to its widespread appeal. It is a staple social activity, often enjoyed by families and friends during gatherings and holidays.

Key Terms in Phom (Ta La)

- Phom: A valid set consisting of either three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, or three or more cards of the same rank.

- Junk cards: Unmatched cards that are not part of any Phom.

- Ù: An instant win condition where a player successfully forms three Phoms, leaving them with no junk cards.

- Stomach (Nọc): The remaining deck of cards after the initial deal, placed face-down in the center of the table.

- Mom (Móm): A losing hand where a player fails to form a single Phom by the end of the game.

- Taking the pin: On the final turn, playing a junk card that is subsequently picked up by another player.

- Sending: On the final turn, discarding a card that another player can immediately use to complete a Phom; this "sent" card is not counted against the sender's final score.

- Compensation: A penalty scenario where a player who "takes the pin" on the final turn is held responsible if the very next player goes out (Ù). The player who triggered the compensation must cover the resulting point loss.

+ Additionally, if a player is dealt three consecutive cards from the deck, this also triggers a compensation rule.

- Re: A special action that allows a player to reclaim the entire discard pile and take an extra turn, typically triggered by matching a specific card.

How to Play a Game of Phom - Ta La

- A game requires 2 to 4 players. Each player is dealt 9 cards, except for the dealer (or previous round's winner), who receives 10. The leftover cards form the Stomach and are placed face-down in the middle.

- Play proceeds clockwise, starting with the player who holds 10 cards.

- Gameplay Flow:

+ The first player discards a card. The next player may either pick up that card to form a Phom or draw a new card from the Stomach.

+ After picking up a card or drawing from the Stomach, the player must then discard one card. The turn continues in this manner with each subsequent player.

=> This pattern of play continues round by round.

- The game concludes when a player declares "Ù." If no one does, the game ends after four rounds, and players tally the points from their junk cards to determine the winner.

- Final Turn Procedure: A player must first reveal all their Phoms, then "send" any eligible cards to other players' sets, and finally play their last card. Any remaining junk cards are counted for score.

Scoring for Junk Cards (when no one wins with Ù):

+ The player with the lowest total score wins the round.

+ Cards are valued as follows: Ace (A) = 1 point, Jack (J) = 11, Queen (Q) = 12, King (K) = 13. All number cards are worth their face value.

+ In the event of a tie, the player who revealed their hand first is ranked higher.

- Final Point Calculation:

+ 1st Place: +6 points

+ 2nd Place: -1 point

+ 3rd Place: -2 points

+ 4th Place: -3 points

+ Player who "Takes the Pin": -4 points

+ Player who gives the pin (gets their card taken): +4 points

+ Winning by Ù or "Ù Khan": +15 points (with each opponent losing 5 points)

+ "Burned" Player (loses all rounds): Loses an additional 4 points, which are awarded to the winner.
