Zelda: Wind Waker HD Hopes Persist Amid Switch 2 GameCube Rumors

Author:Kristen Update:May 13,2025

The excitement surrounding The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 through the GameCube library doesn't dampen hopes for a full port. Nate Bihldorff, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of product development, shared insights with Kinda Funny's Tim Gettys, reassuring fans that a game's availability on Nintendo Switch Online does not rule out the possibility of a remaster or remake.

Despite their popularity within the Zelda series, both The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess have yet to make their way to the Nintendo Switch family, including the original Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. This absence has sparked concerns among fans, especially since The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, which was previously ported to the Wii U in 2013, will soon be part of Nintendo's premium subscription service upon the Nintendo Switch 2's release on June 5.

Bihldorff's comments during a Q&A session were enlightening. He firmly stated that the availability of The Wind Waker on Nintendo Switch Online does not preclude the possibility of the Wii U port coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. He emphasized that "all options are on the table," hinting at potential future releases, whether as remakes or the same port version. This openness leaves room for hope among fans, as Bihldorff noted that Nintendo has a history of offering games through multiple avenues.

The announcement of GameCube titles joining the Nintendo Switch Online service was a highlight of last week's Nintendo Direct. This update will enrich the service's premium library with classic titles from the 2000s, including F-Zero GX and Soulcalibur 2, all set to launch this summer alongside The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Nintendo has plans to further expand this library with anticipated titles like Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Recent news also touched on the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order date, which faced delays in the United States due to import tariffs, a situation that also affected Nintendo Canada. For those eager to stay updated, there's plenty more to explore from everything announced at the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct.
