  • This video is a collaboration with PlatinumWoW.

World of Warcraft recently partnered with PlatinumWoW to release a lore video exploring the rich history of the Feast of Winter Veil. This in-game event, a beloved World of Warcraft tradition, boasts a captivating history in Azeroth, from its origins to the infamous kidnappings of Metzen the Reindeer.

The Feast of Winter Veil serves as World of Warcraft's equivalent of Christmas. Each year, Blizzard Entertainment revives the event, offering special rewards and activities, often introducing new collectible items obtainable through various means, including random drops and gold.

A newly released video delves into the holiday's fascinating history. Narrated by PlatinumWoW, a renowned World of Warcraft lore expert and content creator, the video explores the holiday's origins: the Dwarven myth of Greatfather Winter, a Titan-forged giant leaving snowy trails; and the Tauren traditions of spiritual reflection, renewal, and gratitude towards the Earthmother. The video also explains the rise of Smokeywood Pastures, a Goblin-run enterprise that commercialized Winter Veil, mirroring real-world Christmas practices.

History of the Feast of Winter Veil in World of Warcraft

No Winter Veil lore video would be complete without mentioning Metzen the Reindeer, named after Warcraft executive creative director Chris Metzen. This unfortunate reindeer has been kidnapped three times: by pirates and Dark Iron Dwarves in Classic WoW, and by the Grinch in the modern version. The video concludes with a humorous moment: Metzen the Reindeer thanking viewers in Thrall's voice, a fitting tribute as Thrall is voiced by Chris Metzen.

This isn't PlatinumWoW's first collaboration with World of Warcraft. Over the past few years, he's created lore videos on Nerubians, Vrykul, and the Scourge for Wrath of the Lich King Classic, World Trees and Blackrock Depths for modern WoW, and even helpful guides for events like Season of Discovery and Plunderstorm. These collaborations, along with Taliesin & Evitel's tips for returning Dragonflight players and Hurricane's stunning cinematic trailers for World of Warcraft Classic, showcase Blizzard's recent embrace of content creator partnerships.

Players can still enjoy the Feast of Winter Veil until January 5, 2024. This year, World of Warcraft Hunters can tame the Dreaming Festive Reindeer, and all players can collect new holiday transmogs and the Grunch pet. After their own holiday celebrations, players should check under the tree in Orgrimmar or Stormwind for a special Winter Veil gift, similar to last year's Junior Timekeeper's Racing Belt toy.
