How to Unlock the Gunsmithing Skill in Atomfall

To access upgraded weapon blueprints in Atomfall, you must first obtain the Gunsmithing skill. This survival skill requires locating and studying a Crafting Manual. While finding skill manuals can be challenging, there's a straightforward method for this particular one.

Morris Wick at Wyndham's Village Shop possesses a Crafting Manual, but standard trading won't suffice. Securing it requires strategic negotiation. During your initial visit to St. Katherine's Church, dialogue suggests Vicar Benton seeks to conceal Maisie's recent murder. However, investigation reveals Morris as the true culprit.

The incriminating evidence - a note titled "Kill the One They Call Maisie" - resides in the Brewery Cellar (coordinates: 30.5 E, 80.5 N) west of Wyndham Village. Search this ruined building's cellar until you locate the damning document. Return to Morris' shop (33.3 E, 79.9 N) and select dialogue options that gradually apply pressure until the "Bargaining" choice appears. This exchange yields the Crafting Manual in return for your silence.

Note: The manual also appears in The Interchange's D Section, though this acquisition method proves significantly more challenging.

After obtaining and reading the manual, invest 7 Training Stimulants to unlock the Gunsmith skill, granting access to weapon upgrade recipes. These valuable skill points can be found in B.A.R.D. structures like bunkers and The Interchange.

With both the Crafting Manual and Gunsmith skill, you gain access to weapon upgrade blueprints. Each acquired weapon unlocks its subsequent tier recipes, progressing through Rusty, Stock, and Pristine variants. Upgrading requires two copies of the current-tier weapon plus varying amounts of Gun Oil and Scrap.

For instance, upgrading the Falkirk Battle Rifle to Pristine (shown above) demands:

  • 2 Stock Falkirk Battle Rifles
  • 3 Gun Oil
  • 6 Scrap

Military installations like Protocol Camps yield Gun Oil and Scrap most reliably. Frequent upgraders should consider investing in the Deep Pockets skill for enhanced material carrying capacity.

First-time Pristine upgrades reward players with the 'Make Do and Mend' Achievement/Trophy.

Atomfall is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Game Pass.
