Joseph Kosinski, the acclaimed director behind films like Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy, is reportedly gearing up to helm a new Miami Vice movie for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This exciting project will see Kosinski collaborating with Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy, who is set to refine the screenplay initially drafted by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy, who has recently contributed to multiple episodes of the critically acclaimed Star Wars series Andor—created by his brother Tony—brings a wealth of storytelling prowess to the table.

Miami Vice, the iconic NBC police drama, was originally created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. Airing for five seasons from 1984 to 1989, the series starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as the suave Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Celebrated for its revolutionary approach to television aesthetics, sound, and narrative, Miami Vice remains a touchstone in TV history.

The series was previously adapted into a film in 2006, directed by Michael Mann and featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the lead roles. While further details on Kosinski’s Miami Vice project are sparse at this stage, it's clear that it won't be his immediate follow-up to the upcoming film F1, set for release in June. This timeline offers Kosinski ample opportunity to immerse himself in the vibrant world of Miami Vice and perhaps even select the perfect Ferrari to complement the film’s stylish flair.
