The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a Nintendo patent on February 6, 2025, detailing innovative Joy-Con features for the Switch 2. The patent strongly suggests mouse capabilities, corroborating speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which showed the controller being swiped across a surface.

This patent, coupled with Nintendo's silence on Switch 2 specifics, all but confirms these new controller functions.

Enhanced Functionality and New Controllers

The Switch 2 Joy-Cons retain the detachable design of their predecessors. The patent describes a mouse function enabled by a sensor detecting reflected light changes as the controller moves across a surface. The text reads, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

A new charging dock accommodates simultaneous charging of up to two Joy-Cons. A magnetic attachment, complete with a wrist strap, securely connects the Joy-Cons to the console.

The patent also introduces a novel controller design: a standard controller split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality. A connecting attachment allows these halves to function as a single, standard controller.
