Netflix to Reimagine Stephen King's Cujo

Author:Kristen Update:Jun 25,2026

In Hollywood's latest trend of "another remake announcement" — or more optimistically framed as "another Stephen King adaptation" — Netflix is preparing to unleash a fresh take on Cujo.

The streaming giant has secured Vertigo Entertainment founder Roy Lee to produce this new adaptation of King's terrifying tale, according to Deadline. However, the project remains in its earliest stages with no writer, director, or cast currently attached.

Originally published in 1981, King's novel became a cult classic horror film just two years later when director Lewis Teague brought it to screen. The gripping story centers on a desperate mother (memorably portrayed by Dee Wallace) trapped in a sweltering car with her son while defending against the titular rabid Saint Bernard. What begins as a gentle family pet turns into a relentless killer after contracting rabies from a bat bite.

Cujo joins the growing list of King stories receiving modern reinterpretations, following February's release of Oz Perkins' The Monkey adaptation. Fans can anticipate several upcoming projects including Glen Powell's The Running Man, JT Mollner's The Long Walk (also produced by Lee), and HBO's IT prequel Welcome to Derry. Additionally, Mike Flanagan is transforming King's seminal Carrie into an eight-episode Prime Video series.

For devoted Stephen King enthusiasts, this represents an embarrassment of riches — with even more chilling adaptations currently in development.
