"Sony Vet Recalls 'Nearly Done' Game for Canceled Nintendo PlayStation"

Author:Kristen Update:May 20,2025

In a fascinating dive into gaming history, former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida recently shared insights on the Nintendo PlayStation prototype during an interview with MinnMax. Yoshida, who joined Sony in February 1993 to work with Ken Kutaragi, known as 'the father of PlayStation,' reminisced about his early days at Sony. He revealed that new team members, including himself, were introduced to the Nintendo PlayStation prototype on their first day. This prototype was already functional, and Yoshida even had the chance to play a nearly completed game on it.

The game in question was likened by Yoshida to a space shooter similar to the Sega CD title Silpheed, which streamed in assets from the CD. Although Yoshida couldn't recall the developer or the specific location where it was made, he hinted at the possibility that the game might still exist in Sony's archives, given it was stored on a CD.

The Nintendo PlayStation, a rare artifact of a potential alternate history where Nintendo and Sony collaborated, continues to captivate collectors and enthusiasts. Its unreleased status only adds to its allure, making it a highly sought-after item in auctions and collector communities.

The idea of revisiting this piece of gaming history, perhaps even releasing the space-shooter game developed for the Nintendo PlayStation, is intriguing. There's precedent for such a release, as seen with Nintendo's eventual launch of Star Fox 2 years after its initial cancellation. This sparks hope that one day, this unique part of video game history could be shared with the world.
