Shrek 5's Revamped Look Stirs Buzz, Sonic Chimes In

Shrek 5 has revealed its refreshed cast through a striking new teaser trailer, leaving even Movie Sonic puzzled by Shrek's updated appearance.

In a playful, self-aware video shared on TikTok, the Sonic Movie account offered "tips for green ogres," highlighting Movie Sonic's transformation from its notorious initial live-action design to the polished version unveiled months later.

IGN got the first peek at live-action Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie in 2018, and the response was, to put it mildly, divisive, with fans fixated on the character’s teeth, build, small eyes, and oddly human-like fingers.

After the outcry, director Jeff Fowler opted to overhaul the contentious design of the beloved character, committing to a more faithful look. The revamp was far better embraced.

Though the reaction to Shrek's new design isn’t quite as heated as Sonic’s original live-action debut, Sonic’s witty jab has still delighted fans.

“It’s rough when the Sonic Movie account is schooling Shrek 5,” one commenter quipped, while another wrote, “Can’t believe they posted this,” paired with a crying emoji.

The fifth Shrek film was first teased in 2016 but stayed under wraps until Chris Meledandri, Illumination’s CEO, confirmed its active development in 2023, alongside plans for a potential Donkey spin-off. Universal Pictures pushed Shrek 5’s release to December 23, 2026, swapping its slot with the Despicable Me spin-off Minions 3.
