Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Says

Author:Kristen Update:May 13,2025

Are you excited about Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? The director of Deadpool & Wolverine is still at the helm, and we've received a reassuring update from the project's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the anticipated film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

While the film remains largely shrouded in mystery, we know it is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified its timeline, stating, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

In the same conversation, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she noted. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film, adding to the anticipation.

Tropper's optimistic words suggest that progress is being made on Levy's project. However, fans will need to remain patient, as the earliest we might see this film is the last quarter of 2026, or possibly even 2027.

Disney has not released a Star Wars film since the divisive Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Since then, several projects have been canceled, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Moreover, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

This last film will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey following the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nevertheless, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating her involvement in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

Disney's Star Wars plans extend even further. Late last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars project to hit screens is Season 2 of Andor, set to premiere on Disney+ on April 22 with an exciting triple premiere episode.
