The Last of Us Season 2 Will Feature 'Pretty Brutal' Content Cut From the Game

HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will resurrect cut content from the original The Last of Us Part II video game, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head, Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will feature "pretty brutal" scenes, including elements from the "Lost Levels" partially restored in the PlayStation 5 remaster. These levels – Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers – offer varying tones, from the relatively calmer party and boar hunt sequences to the intense horror of Ellie's sewer escape.

The restored content promises edge-of-your-seat moments. Druckmann hinted at the inclusion of a previously unshown, "pretty prominent" character, mirroring Season 1's handling of Frank. Season 2 introduces a significant cast expansion, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel, alongside Catherine O'Hara in a currently undisclosed role.

With the premiere of Season 2, Episode 1 slated for April, answers to these mysteries are imminent. However, HBO's plan to extend the adaptation of Part II beyond a single season suggests some storylines may remain unresolved for a longer period. Showrunner Craig Mazin previously indicated that Part II's narrative scope necessitates a multi-season approach. While Season 3 isn't confirmed, Season 2's seven-episode arc concludes with a "natural breakpoint."
