Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5 Are Still Selling Very Well

Rockstar Games' enduring success: GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to dominate sales charts.

Key Highlights:

  • Both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 maintain exceptionally strong sales years after their initial releases.
  • In December 2024, GTA 5 secured the third spot as the best-selling PS5 title in both the US/Canada and Europe.
  • During the same period, Red Dead Redemption 2 claimed the top spot for PS4 sales in the US and second place in the EU.

Despite their considerable age (GTA 5 released in 2013, RDR2 in 2018), these open-world behemoths continue to attract significant player interest. This enduring popularity reflects Rockstar's consistent delivery of high-quality, critically acclaimed titles within the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption universes.

GTA 5, initially a massive hit, has cemented its legacy as one of the best-selling entertainment products ever, fueled by numerous re-releases and its immensely popular online mode. Similarly, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, garnered widespread critical acclaim and substantial commercial success.

December 2024 PlayStation sales data underscores this continued success. GTA 5's strong performance extended to the PS4, where it ranked fifth in both the US/Canada and Europe. RDR2's dominance on the PS4 was even more pronounced, achieving first place in the US and second in the EU (behind EA Sports FC 25).

Beyond 2024:

European sales data for 2024 (via VGC, based on GSD figures) further illustrates the games' staying power. GTA 5 rose to fourth place (from fifth in 2023), while RDR2 climbed to seventh (from eighth). Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, reported staggering sales figures: over 205 million units for GTA 5 and over 67 million for RDR2.

This sustained success highlights the longevity of Rockstar's creations. Fans eagerly anticipate the future of both franchises: the much-anticipated GTA 6 is slated for release later this year, while speculation points towards a potential Nintendo Switch 2 port for Red Dead Redemption 2.
