Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

Author:Kristen Update:Feb 20,2025

Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected it with a completely revamped port.

For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning puzzle where players absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming prey themselves. Its simple yet engaging gameplay made it a hit, but Android users have been unable to enjoy it until now.

Years after its 2010 debut, Osmos is back on Google Play, optimized for modern Android devices. Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that the original Android version, developed with Apportable, became difficult to update after Apportable's closure. The game's subsequent removal from the app store due to incompatibility with current Android systems (specifically, its reliance on defunct 32-bit systems) paved the way for this much-needed re-release.

Osmos' innovative mechanics have clearly influenced many subsequent games, and its absence from the social media landscape during its initial release is almost a missed opportunity – it would likely be a viral sensation on TikTok today.

Osmos offers a nostalgic experience, reminiscent of a time when mobile gaming felt boundless. While many excellent puzzle games exist on mobile platforms, Osmos stands out with its elegant design and captivating gameplay.
