Bethesda has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not include official mod support, but this hasn't deterred the passionate fanbase from creating their own unofficial mods. Just hours after Bethesda and Virtuos' surprise release of the remastered version on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, a variety of community mods surfaced on the popular modding site Nexus Mods. These early mods, although primarily focused on minor customization, underscore the unwavering dedication of The Elder Scrolls community.
At the time of writing, Nexus Mods boasts an impressive 22 mods for Oblivion Remastered. The first mod to be released offers PC users the chance to personalize their desktop by swapping the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut icon with one of two images featuring the game's notorious Adoring Fan. Other mods allow players to bypass the introductory Bethesda and Virtuos logo screens. Additionally, mods that modify gameplay elements, such as tweaking the Wizard's Fury spell and removing the compass, are already available.
The influx of these mods comes despite Bethesda's announcement that Oblivion Remastered lacks official mod support. This information was shared in an FAQ section on their website, prompting players to seek modding solutions elsewhere. Nexus Mods user GodschildGaming, for instance, released an Iron Longsword damage mod to demonstrate that modding is still feasible.
“This is just to prove modding is possible,” GodschildGaming stated in the mod’s description. “Bethesda says no mod support, I say false. It really is Unreal slapped on top of Oblivion, the data folder is nested in a lot more folders but same concept.”
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, released 19 years after the original, is now available on PC and consoles. As more players dive into the game, the modding community is expected to grow, offering increasingly diverse and innovative ways to customize the experience. While awaiting further mods, players can explore discussions on whether today's release leans more towards a remake than a remaster and why Bethesda chose the "Remastered" label.
