Nintendo's Switch 2 Camera: 1080p vs. Hori's 480p Piranha Plant Model

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 19,2025

Hori’s Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera boasts a resolution of just 480p, which is significantly lower than the 1080p resolution of Nintendo’s official Switch 2 camera. The UK My Nintendo Store has officially confirmed these resolutions, providing clarity for consumers:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Camera - Video capture quality: 1080p.
  • Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2 - Camera resolution: 640 × 480.

Despite its lower resolution, Hori’s Piranha Plant camera is officially licensed by Nintendo and comes at a more affordable price than Nintendo’s own $49.99 camera. It's also important to note that the Switch 2 supports the use of any compatible USB-C camera, giving users flexibility in their choice of accessory. Both the Nintendo and Hori cameras are set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera offers unique features, such as the ability to detach the webcam part from the pot, allowing for direct placement on top of the Switch 2 for enhanced portability, which is a feature not available with Nintendo's camera. Additionally, the plant's mouth can be closed to cover the lens, adding a fun and functional element to the design.

Hori’s Piranha Plant camera is just 480p resolution.

The announcement of the Piranha Plant camera's 480p resolution sparked a wave of reactions among Nintendo fans. Redditor Ramen536Pie remarked, "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025? That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera." LizardsoftheGhost found humor in the situation, joking, "That’s actually hilarious. Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out." Another user, pokemonfitness1420, questioned, "Isn’t 480p a crime nowadays?"

During last week’s Nintendo Direct, the company unveiled the Switch 2’s GameChat feature, which is activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con. This feature enables players to watch and interact with each other while playing the same or different games. The integration of a camera enhances the experience, allowing visual communication, and the built-in microphone is praised for its reliability across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is designed to be a comprehensive multiplayer feature, potentially marking Nintendo's most significant online push in recent years.
