"Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Details Revealed in Patent"

Author:Kristen Update:May 14,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be an evolution of its predecessor, with the most significant changes focusing on the innovative Joy-Con controllers, as revealed by recent patents.

Although Nintendo has not officially confirmed the details, various reports suggest that the Switch 2's Joy-Cons will feature magnetic attachments and a unique mouse-like functionality. These enhancements are now backed by a series of patents filed by Nintendo, providing concrete evidence of the anticipated features.

The patent describes, "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." This indicates that the Joy-Cons will magnetically attach to the Switch 2's body, offering a seamless and secure connection.

Additionally, the patent specifies the detachment mechanism, stating, "The first button and the second button are provided in the longitudinal direction in the top surface of the protrusion. The first button and the second button are to be pressed by a user. The first button is attracted to the first magnet by a magnetic force. The second button is attracted to the second magnet by a magnetic force." This dual-button system ensures that the Joy-Cons remain firmly in place until intentionally removed.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the patent is the illustration of the Joy-Cons being used as a mouse. The patent shows the player holding the controller railside down, using the shoulder buttons as mouse buttons. Specifically, "The R1 and R2 buttons act like the left and right mouse button respectively," and there is a suggestion of a scrolling function using the joysticks.

Further illustrations depict various configurations, such as using the Joy-Cons in a dual-mouse setup or combining one as a mouse and the other as a traditional game controller. This versatility could open up new gaming and productivity possibilities on the Switch 2.

The magnetic attachment feature was one of the earliest leaks associated with the Switch 2, while the mouse-like function emerged later and has yet to be officially confirmed. However, a teaser released in January subtly hinted at this feature, showing the Joy-Cons gliding across a surface like a computer mouse.
