Recent Nintendo filings have ignited speculation among fans about a potential new GameCube controller for the upcoming Switch 2. A new FCC filing, as reported by Nintendo Life, details a "game controller" compatible with the Switch 2, strongly suggesting a wireless Bluetooth device. Further investigation by Famiboards revealed an image within the filing showing a label placement consistent with the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick.

While the possibility of a new Switch 2 Pro Controller exists, current speculation points towards its integration with Nintendo Switch Online, which already supports wireless classic controllers for retro gaming. This has fueled anticipation for a GameCube game library on the Nintendo Switch Online service. Nintendo fans have long requested GameCube classics on the Switch, but Nintendo has thus far focused on NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy titles. Could the Switch 2 finally bring GameCube games to a wider audience?

Nintendo Consoles

The Switch 2 was unveiled in January with a short trailer showcasing backwards compatibility and a second USB-C port. Many details remain undisclosed, including the full game lineup and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button. A recent Nintendo patent suggests the Switch 2's Joy-Cons can be attached upside down, utilizing gyro mechanics similar to smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Switch's locking rails, the new controllers appear to use magnets for attachment on either side.

This design change offers flexibility in button placement and port positioning, and could potentially enable innovative gameplay mechanics. Analysts predict a $400-$500 price point for the Switch 2, with a potential June release. More details are expected during a Nintendo Direct planned for April 2nd.
