New Mini Controller Enables Portrait Mode Gaming!

If you're a gamer, you've likely experienced the frustration of playing vertical arcade games on your phone in landscape mode. Enter the Tate mode mini controller, a creative solution designed by modder Max Kern to address this issue. But does it truly solve the problem?

Most controllers are optimized for landscape mode, similar to those used on the Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, classic vertical shooters and retro games require a portrait orientation, akin to scrolling through Instagram. Recognizing this, Max Kern developed a compact USB-C gamepad specifically for portrait-mode, or Tate mode, gaming. This innovative controller plugs directly into your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.

Max crafted the Tate Mode mini controller using a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, with the case and buttons 3D-printed through JLCPCB. Enthusiasts can even follow his tutorial on his YouTube channel to build their own.

The controller utilizes the GP2040-CE firmware, functioning as a standard HID controller compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. Its versatility is impressive given its small size.

However, there are concerns about the strain it may place on the USB-C port, as the gamepad partially supports the phone's weight. Users will need to carefully manage both the phone and controller to prevent potential damage to the connector over time.

Feedback on Reddit varies, with some praising the ingenuity while others worry about potential hand cramps and discomfort. It's important to note that this isn't a commercial product but a DIY project. Max has generously shared all the necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github for anyone interested in trying it out.
