Microsoft Unveils and Retracts Xbox UI Mockup with Steam Tab

Author:Kristen Update:Apr 28,2025

Microsoft has inadvertently revealed a potential new feature for Xbox UI that could allow players to view all their installed PC games from various platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store. This revelation came from a prematurely published blog post titled "Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox," which included an image showcasing a "Steam" tab on various devices. Although the image was quickly removed from the post, it was captured and shared by The Verge.

This unexpected glimpse into the future of Xbox UI has sparked curiosity, especially since Valve’s Steam platform does not typically integrate directly with Microsoft's gaming hardware in this manner. According to The Verge, Microsoft is indeed developing an update that would connect users' Xbox consoles to their PC game libraries across multiple storefronts. However, this feature is still in its early stages, and no immediate rollout is expected.

The inclusion of Steam in an official Xbox UI mockup, even if accidental, is significant. Over the past decade, Microsoft has increasingly brought its titles to PC and other platforms. Notable examples include Pentiment and Grounded being available on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, with rumors suggesting that the Master Chief Collection might also make its way to PlayStation.

Microsoft has been actively working to bridge the gap between Xbox and PC gaming. The recent "This is an Xbox" campaign highlights the variety of devices on which players can enjoy Xbox games. In an interview with Polygon, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at a future where PC stores like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store could be accessible directly from Xbox hardware.

Looking ahead, Microsoft's rumored next-generation Xbox, expected in 2027, is said to be more akin to a PC than any previous Xbox model. This move underscores Microsoft's commitment to further integrating the Xbox and PC gaming ecosystems.
