"Mario LEGO Set: My First Adult Buy, No Regrets"

Author:Kristen Update:May 01,2025

As a practical person, my spending habits are usually focused on essentials, with the occasional splurge on a discounted video game. However, last year, I found myself drawn to something I hadn't considered in years: a LEGO set. Despite my love for building LEGO as a child, adulthood had shifted my priorities away from such indulgences.

The high cost of LEGO sets, particularly those linked to popular franchises, had always been a deterrent. It took a significant price drop for me to finally justify purchasing the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, which had been on sale since October of the previous year for under $50. It was the perfect addition to my desk, replacing the usual potted plant with something more whimsical.

My interest in the set was sparked after reading IGN's review of the Piranha Plant build. As a long-time fan of Mario games, this set seemed like the ideal way to showcase my affection for the franchise. While LEGO's botanical collection offers beautiful flower sets, none matched the playful yet menacing charm of the Piranha Plant.

Now that I've built the set, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, imagining I'm nurturing my own little Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process itself was enjoyable, completing it in one afternoon yet challenging enough to keep me engaged throughout. Currently, it's my only LEGO Nintendo set, but my positive experience has me considering expanding my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

LEGO sets, especially those aimed at adults, can be quite pricey, with new releases often exceeding $200. It's easy to get carried away and spend more than intended on these captivating builds. For me, the decision to purchase the Mario LEGO set for under $50 felt justified. The hours spent building it and the daily joy it brings me are priceless, yet I draw the line at $50 for such indulgences.
