"Magic: The Gathering Unveils Fun, Surprise-Filled Final Fantasy Commander Decks"

Author:Kristen Update:Jun 03,2025

Wizards of the Coast has been steadily unveiling exciting updates for Magic: The Gathering’s highly anticipated Final Fantasy crossover this summer. Over the weekend, the team showcased a significant portion of the cards, drawn from both the main set and the Commander decks, leaving fans thrilled by the creative twists and even surprising nods to their beloved Final Fantasy games.

The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy combines two formats: the classic Commander treatment and a booster-driven series, resulting in a vast collection of cards to explore. The main set dives deep into the numbered entries of Final Fantasy, spanning from Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 16. Meanwhile, the Commander Decks focus on four specific titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, featuring iconic characters such as Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y’shtola as their respective Commanders.

For instance, Final Fantasy IV’s Cecil embodies his transformation from a Dark Knight to a Paladin, showcasing a unique mechanic tied to this evolution. Summons from Final Fantasy are represented as "Saga Creatures," powerful yet temporary forces that blend the essence of Magic: The Gathering with Final Fantasy concepts.

Cards like Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, feature stunning artwork from Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura, with the card’s design illustrating Sephiroth’s evolution across the Final Fantasy VII universe—from a young warrior to the formidable Safer Sephiroth.

The art and inclusions reveal how the team skillfully translated these Final Fantasy games into Magic: The Gathering mechanics. Reprints or updated versions of existing Magic cards receive clever integrations with Final Fantasy lore. For example, Skullclamp draws inspiration from the Jenova project in Final Fantasy VII for its artwork.

On a lighter note, Final Fantasy X’s Inspiring Call—a frequently memed moment—is also included.

Clever Concealment mirrors the Wall Market scene with Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in dresses, en route to Don Corneo’s. Secret Rendezvous features four variations of the Golden Saucer date scene with Cloud’s possible dates: Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret.

The Hildibrand Manderville card humorously captures his recurring habit of disappearing and reappearing. The Archaeomancer’s Map card even references a real location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map in Final Fantasy XIV.

Final Fantasy 14 players are enjoying the cards, with jokes circulating about the Thancred card and flavor text for Rite of Replication commemorating a famous speech from A Realm Reborn.

Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...
