Jon Bernthal's Punisher is slated for a comeback in a Marvel special, following the conclusion of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. This standalone project, described as a Guardians of the Galaxy-style special, will feature Bernthal himself contributing to the script alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green (known for We Own This City).

Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, promises a high-octane narrative: "It's like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story," he stated.

The announcement of this Punisher special coincides with Marvel Television's plans to revive the Defenders on Disney+. This team of street-level heroes – Daredevil (Matt Murdock), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) – will return after their Netflix run, now integrated into the MCU canon.

Winderbaum previously hinted at the challenges and excitement of this endeavor: "It’s certainly exciting to be able to play in that sandbox…We’re dealing with actors and time and the massive scale of production in order to build a cinematic universe, especially on television. But…it is certainly something that is creatively extremely exciting and that we are very much exploring.”

Daredevil: Born Again, premiering March 4th, picks up where the Netflix series left off, featuring returning characters including the Punisher and Wilson Fisk (Kingpin), played by Vincent D'Onofrio. This season's antagonist is the artfully sinister serial killer, Muse.
